I could be demure like girls who are soft For boys who are fearful of getting an earful But I gotta rock! I'd rather be a ladyman! - "Ballad of a Ladyman," Sleater-Kinney
We like the name Ladymen for two reasons. First, as you can see from the above
quote, we are all huge Sleater-Kinney fans. This particular song touches on
feelings of being more outspoken and aggressive than expected. The second reason we like the name is as a response to gender stereotypes. Still, in 2005, there seem to be clearly defined gender roles people take on, and we say once people look beyond the expectations they must fulfill as female or male, the world will be a much more interesting place! Here is an interview in which drummer Janet Weiss explains the origin of the song name: RD: Elaborate on the idea behind "Ladyman." JW: We played an independant music festival in England last year put on by Belle & Sebastian. They sort of hand picked all these bands to come to this holiday camp in the South of England and camp out and play for the weekend. And while we were there, there was an anonymous message board that fans and other bands could leave messages anonymously for people. We were in a little bunker. It was number 216 and we got a note written to us that said, "Chalet 216, Ladymen yes." We all laughed about it, but I think we all felt a little bit out of place there. Even amoungst the bands that were suppossedly our family. I think we still felt maybe a little too agressive, a little bit too outspoken to fit into this sort of quieter, softer, poppier kind of scene." |
